Objective domains for better teaching

Dividing Blooms taxonomy into 3 Objective domains helps teachers to create well defined, observable, measurable and valid objectives.
First domain, the cognitive domain, sometimes also called knowledge based domain encompasses intellectual or thinking skills. Objectives written under this domain are knowledge objectives. Let’s illustrate how objectives are developed on simple task to teach Colors to a group of students. As an example of a knowledge objective we can then write the following: “Students will be able to memorize basic colors of the rainbow.” It is easy to observe as students can demonstrate their ability to memorize colors by drawing the rainbow. It is also easy to measure as the number of errors in their assignment will serve as performance indicator. And the validity of this objective is justified when students are asked to describe a daily use item as a pen or a white board.
Second domain, the psychomotor domain, also called skill based domain encompasses physical skills, performance or an action. Objectives under this domain are skills objectives. Taking the example of Color teaching, let’s develop a skill domain objective: “Students will be able to describe their surroundings using color adjectives.” This objective requires Students to find colorful objects in their field of view and describe them by using colors. This behavior is easily observable, as students will pick objects teacher can see as well. It is also measurable, since describing objects with correct adjective counts as performance indicator. Validity of this objective is again justified by the fact that students will learn how to describe things they see around them.
Last domain, the affective domain, also called the attitudes domain encompasses attitudes and values. Objectives written under this domain are Attitudes objectives. Continuing with our Colors learning class we can develop the third domain objective this way: “Students will be willing to share the colors of their daily used items in an essay or verbal presentation.” In this objective domain the observable behavior is the level of willingness the students display. It can be their raised hand, delivery of related homework in time, even unsolicited utterance in the class. Objective can be measured by the number of sentences students will create and share and finally validity of our last objective keeps us aware that willingness to practice and train is necessary for skill acquisition.
As demonstrated on examples above, for each of the 3 Objective domains, dividing Blooms taxonomy into these domains helps teachers to create well defined, observable, measurable and valid objectives for their students.

Movember in Chongqing – result

Movember is over

…and I hope you guys enjoyed rising of public awareness as same as cool look and attention of crowds:-|) Last month was very inspiring and I met several Chongqing expats fighting the same battle. Glad to meet you all guys. Maybe next year our ranks will be a little wider 🙂

This year was in the sign of getting to know the tools and learn possible alterations as well as the basics of sculpting, shaving, moisturizing and aftershave doctrine. More about all these things can be found in an excellent article on  www.muzivcesku.cz (in Czech).

Here are several hints I found out this year. Unlike last year, I planned the mustache to be groomed more often and not simply grow wild. First I decided to go for Adolf +goatee, but…this was not an option since my MO simply does not grow any hair in the middle where proper Adolf could be made.
Eventually I chose  the French style with goatee inspired by Floyd’s cut in this episode of The Guild.

Lets get to the movember hints:

  1. If you plan to sculpt, buy a razor, your MACH3 whatever is not going to do a good job.
  2. Always dry your razor before doing the next stroke. Dry razor means more precise and smooth shave.
  3. Your shaving foam is for gliding, not water on your razor! Use quality shaving foam, it pays off.
  4. Small scissors can deal with longer or off the track hairs. Do not force it with the razor, you can damage all your sculpting.
  5. Always use aftershave – girls love that and will forgive you your one month rebellion.
  6. If your Mo is blond/pale, go and dye it…look to the right on Matej and his awesome Mustache after using black dye.

How to add value to your teaching materials

How to screenshot on HTC phone

Recently as I started incorporate more and more personal materials to the teaching. From my wallpaper and music collection, to favorite books and articles…all can be well used to inspire the students and engage them more. Once you offer them something from your self, they become more comfortable sharing their stories and trust degree rapidly rises as same as respect. They start to ask you more questions…

Where is my teacher making these photos?
Where can I find this piece of software?
Whats the name of the Hero from the book he was reading?

Intriguing questions awaiting to be answered and the ultimate source (The Internet) to answer them.
Since I certainly don’t read Chinese books and my pictures are not shared on popular Chinese social media site sina weibo, they have to brows the english sites and thus train their english skill.

Today I was preparing material for next week and while chatting with my friends on a popular chatting platform weixing (wechat) I realized the usage of conditionals can be very common in English. Though it is tricky to master it and might get complicated – 3rd and mixed conditional especially:-D

I searched my conversations for basic examples and wanted to share them in presentation. BUT eyyy…how do you do a screen-shot on your HTC Android phone...after 10 minutes trying and searching in options I decendet to good old google and find a solution online. Honestly it would never occure to me that such combination of button clicks might be helpful.

Hope it will help more people to create personalized materials for their students.
